Points per game is the most quoted number in basketball, and the most misleading. Here's what the average quietly hides.
Open any all-time leaderboard and you'll see career points per game treated as the final word on a scorer. It's clean, it's famous, and it fits in a sentence. It's also the stat most likely to trick you, because a per-game average answers a much narrower question than people think it does. It tells you how much a player scored on a typical night. It says nothing about how many of those nights there were.
That gap is where the trouble starts. Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain sit tied at the top of the career list at 30.1 points per game. By the headline number they're identical scorers. But Jordan posted his 30.1 across 1,072 games, and the players just behind them tell an even sharper story.
Look at five players clustered near the top of the all-time scoring average and the problem becomes obvious:

Luka Dončić's 29.2 and Joel Embiid's 27.7 are spectacular, but they've been earned over roughly 500 games each. LeBron James sits "lower" at 26.8 — across 1,622 games, more than three times Embiid's sample. Asking whether 29.2 over 500 games beats 26.8 over 1,600 isn't a stats question at all; it's a question about what you value. The average alone pretends there's no difference.
Here's the cleanest proof that the average misleads: the man at the top of the per-game list is not the man who scored the most points. Jordan leads in average, yet LeBron James is the NBA's all-time leading scorer and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is second — both with lower career averages than Jordan. They got there the only way anyone does, by combining a high average with an enormous number of games. A rate stat and a volume stat are answering two different questions, and a career is really the product of both.
There's a subtler trap. A career average is frozen at the moment you read it, so active players are graded before their decline years have happened. A 26-year-old superstar is being measured entirely on his prime; the 38-year-old grinding through a farewell season is dragging his own average down with every below-prime night. That's part of why young stars cluster so high on the per-game list — not because they've out-scored the legends, but because they haven't yet played the seasons that pull the number back to earth. The average isn't lying, exactly. It's just measuring a shorter, kinder slice of the story.
Per-game average is a genuinely good stat for one thing: how productive a player was on a representative night. Pair it with games played and you get the fuller picture — peak rate on one axis, durability and volume on the other. The greats who top both lists (the ones who scored a lot, for a long time) are the ones the eye test and the math finally agree on.
